okay, so something really wierd is going on. if i launch rxvt-unicode from
fvwm's buttons, it doesn't really go into utf-8, even though $LANG shows it
as such. but if i use *the exact same command* (ie I copied and pasted it
from the ~/.fvwm/buttions.screen0), then it does go into utf-8. someone
explain this.

anyway, not really having been in a unicode terminal screwwed this file up.
this fixes that.
